Heather Fell wins World Cup Gold

Heather Fell wins World Cup GoldModern PentathlonBritain’s Heather Fell won the third round of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Millfield, England. Team GB’s Athens 2004 bronze medallist finished seventh on
5344 points, with Mhairi Spence, fifteenth on 5208 points, with Lindsey Weedon, twentieth on 5088 points.

Wiggins and Cavendish win Madison Gold

Gold in Madison for Wiggins and CavendishCycling - TrackThe pairing of Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish won Gold in the Men's Madison World Championships in Manchester.

Belgium and Denmark gained an early lap, and were then joined by Switzerland. Wiggins and Cavendish managedcto secure plenty of sprint points but every time they troied to take a lap to join the leaders, the move was countered. Finally, the team secured the lap that they needed with only twenty laps remaining. Five teams gained a lap during the race, but the British pair had to hold off a late burst from the Germans to secure the Gold.

Sam Weale wins World Cup bronze

Heather Fell wins World Cup GoldModern PentathlonSam Weale won bronze in the third round of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Millfield, England. Nick Woodbridge finished eighth as both men earned valuable ranking points towards OLympic qualification.

Pendleton takes Sprint Gold

Sprint Gold for HoyCycling - TrackVictoria Pendleton won Gold in the Women's Sprint at the World Championships in Manchester.

Pendleton beat Simona Krupeckaite (Lithuania) 2-0 in the final, following on from victorias against Anastasiya Chulkova (Russia), Clara Sanchez (France), Yvonne Hijgenaar (Netherlands) and Jennie Reed (USA). Pendleton had qualified fastest from the time trial.

The Women's Sprint takes place on 19th August 2008.

Hoy wins Gold in Keirin

Hoy wins Gold in KeirinCycling - TrackChris Hoy won the Men's Keirin at the World Championships in Manchester.

Chris Hoy went to the front with 500m to go and held on to the finish line to win his second successive title in the event and his second gold of this championships. But boy did he have to work for it. Christos Volikakis, of Greece, tried to box him in and Teun Mulder (Netherlnads) tried desperately to come around him as the finish line approached. Hoy managed to hold on. Mulder took a deserved silver and Volikakis bronze, with fellow Brit Matthew Crampton sixth.

Hoy takes Sprint Gold

Sprint Gold for HoyCycling - TrackChris Hoy won Gold in the Men's Sprint at the World Championships in Manchester.

Hoy faced Kevin Sireau of France in the final, after victories against Roberto Chiappa (Italy), Theo Bos (Netherlands), Maximilian Levy (Germany) and Teun Mulder (Netherlands) had followed his fourth place time trial qualification.

Sireau was this seasons World Cup winner, beating Hoy 2-0 in the final. Hoy reversed that result in Manchester and will hope to follow that up in Beijing.

Hoy is the first rider to win all four World Championship sprint titles during his career - Match Sprint, Keirin, Team and Kilo.

The Men's Sprint takes place on 19th August 2008.

Romero wins Gold

Romero wins World Championship Pursuit GoldCycling - TrackRebecca Romero won a Gold Medal in the Women's Individual Pursuit at the World Championships in Manchester.

Rebecca Romero (3:30.501) beat American Sarah Hammer (3.37.006) in the final. Australian Katie Mactier (3:32.347) beat Britains Wendy Houvenaghel (3:34.168) for the bronze medal.

The Women's Pursuit takes place on 17th August 2008.

Team Pursuit Gold at World Championships

British Team won the Time Trial in SydneyCycling - TrackGerraint Thomas, Paul Manning, Ed Clancy and Bradley Wiggins broke the World Record in winning the Men's Team Pursuit at the World Championships in Manchester.

The team beat Denmark in the final in a time of 3:56.322. Australia beat New Zealand to claim the bronze.

The Men's Team Pursuit takes place on 17th August 2008.

Team Sprint Silver at World Championships

Team Sprint Silver in ManchesterCycling - TrackThe British team won Team Sprint Silver at the World Championships in Manchester.

Jamie Staff, Ross Edgar and Chris Hoy finished second fastest in qualifying to set up the Gold medal clash against France.

At the end of the first lap Gregory Bauge had given the French just 7 hundredths of a second advantage from Jamie Staff and GB. The French moved further ahead on the second lap saw the French gain control, extending their advantage to 4 tenths of a second. Chris Hoy on the anchor lap tried to recover the deficit but the French .

The Bronze medal went to the Netherlands who beat Germany in the medal ride-off.

The Men's Team Sprint takes place on 15th August 2008.

Wiggins win World Championship Gold

Wiggins wins Gold in BeijingCycling - TrackBradley Wiggins won the the Individual Pursuit Gold medal at the World Championships in Manchester, beating Jenning Huizenga of the Netherlands in the final. Russia's Alexi Markov beat and Hayden Roulston (New Zealand) to take the Bronze medal.

Huizenga who went off fastestto take a lead of 7 tenths of a second. However, at the end of the first Kilometre, Wiggins was ahead by one tenth. Wiggins gradually extended his lead to just over a second at half distance. At the end of the third kilometre Wiggins was ahead by three seconds. Wiggins completed the 4 kiliometres in 4.18.519, with Huizenga on 4.23.474.

Daley wins European Gold

DivingDaley wins European GoldTom Daley won the Gold medal in the 10m platform diving at the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven. Daley is the youngest person to win a gold medal at the European Swimming Championships.

Great Britain Men win Qualifying Competition

Great Britain qualify for BeijingHockeyThe Great Britain Men's hockey team beat India 2-0 in the Final Match at the Olympic Qualifying Competition in Santiago, Chile.

Great Britain had qualified for the final with five victories in the pool matches, including a last minutes 3-2 score against India.

In the final, Britain scored twice inside the first ten minutes through Barry Middleton and a Richard Mantell short corner. India exerted considerable pressure at times but the team defended resolutely to earn their place in the Beijing tournament.

Flyweight Khalid Yafai qualifys for Beijing

BoxingFlyweight (51 kg), Khalid Yafai won a Silver medal at the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Pescara, Italy.

Yafai withdrew from the final against Hungarian Norbert Kalucza having secured qualification for Beijing.

Yafai advanced to the final with victories over Nasir of Wales (Retired Round 3) and Igor Samoilenco of Moldova (13:11).

Day 15The finals of the Flyweight division take place on the 23rd August 2008.

Billy Joe Saunders wins Bronze at Olympic Qualification event

BoxingWelterweight (69kg), Billy Joe Saunders won a Bronze medal at the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Pescara, Italy.

Saunders had to compete in a box-off for the coverted Olympic place after losing his semi-final bout against Olexander Strelskyy of Ukraine, 15-13. He won the crucial bout against Slovakian Pavol Hlavacka, 20-10.

Saunders advanced to the semi-final with victories over;
  • Andrey Balanov of Russia (18:13)
  • Michal Starbala of Poland (13:12)
  • Kakhaber Zhvania of Georgia (15:5)

Day 16The boxing competition takes place throughout the Olympifc programme. Six finals take place on the final day.

DeGale wins Middleweight Qualification

BoxingMiddleweight (75kg), James Degale won a Silver medal at the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Pescara, Italy.

DeGale withdrew from the final against Swedens Terbunja Naim having secured qualification for Beijing.

DeGale advanced to the final with victories over;
  • Giorgi Nakani of Georgia (18:5)
  • Abella Castillo of Spain (12:8)
  • Darren Sutherland of Ireland (25:16)
  • Istvan Szili of Hungary (22:14)
