China lose to Bulgaria at Volleyball

We enjoyed Volleyball in Athens, so we were happy to get a session for Beijing. We saw the home nation, China, beaten by the Bulgarian team 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 26-28, 25-19). It was an exciting match and the 'cheering squads' were working to the maximim in the third set when China saved severl match points before managing to take the match to an extra set.

In the second match, Poland beat Germany 3-0 (25-17, 33-31, 25-20).

Cycling Gold at Great Wall

The Women's Road Race passed by on our return from the Basketball. The race ended at the Great Wall, so we were unable to see the finish, but we saw the cyclists go past the Lama Temple, sort off, as the picture shows. Nicole Cooke went onto to win the race and secure Great Britains first Gold of Beijing 2008.

Germany beat Angola, but the Chinese (and Brits) are watching

In our second visit to the Basketball Gymnasium we saw Russia defeat Iran 71 – 49 and Germany beat Angola 95 – 66. Sat directly in front of us were some youngsters attired in Team GB kit, who were at the matches to see what the Olympics is all about.

This morning it was the Chinese basketball team who created the biggest stir, when they came to watch the Germany vs Angola game. The Chinese play the US this evening, but it's these two teams who they will have to beat if they want to get a place in the quarter-finals.

Women's Basketball Preliminary Matches

Yesterday was spent recovering from the Opening Ceremony and checking out the facilities at Choayang Park, which proved toi be a big disappointment.

The evening was spent at the Wukesong Culture and Sports Center where the Olympic Basketball is being held in the Gymnasium. We had tickets to see two Women's Basketball Preliminary Matches. Our first match was the US against the Czech Republic. The czechs made a good start but, the americans soon pulled back the eight point deficit to lead after the first quarter and were comfortable 97 - 57 winners. The US men's team were watching and caused a great deal of excitment amongst the chinese fans.

The second match was a much tighter affair and it was only in the final quarter that the Russian team secured the 62 - 57 win against Latvia. Latvia had been leading 48 - 41 after the third quarter.

Opening Ceremony lives up to expectations

We had the tremendous privilege to see the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympics last night. It certainly lived up to all the expectations. Everybody seemed to enjoy it tremendously.

There were some fantastic set pieces. The drummers to start, the wall symbology, the one world one dream sequence and the lifting of the final torch bearer into the rafters were all stunning realised.

I'm sure that it was a televsion spectacular. Although for us in the audience there were a couple of minor niggles.

Firstly, the production was all towards the VIPs, so we had a lot of back views of the action. But the main disappointment was that we couldn't see the torch from inside the stadium!

The Games have now begun a sixteen days of competition await.

"Is she a film star?"

Ever since we arrived in Beijing, Verity has been inundated with requests for Chinese people to be photographed with her. Her pale skin is a sign of extreme beauty here. When we went to the Zoo she must have been photographed more than most of the exhibits!

It reached ridiculous levels yesterday when 'the beautiful one' was waiting in the queue to get into the stadium for the Opening Ceremony, and we must have spent a good half an hour being photographer by others in the queue. I stepped away to take this photo to be asked by an american "Is she a film star?". I then had to pose, about a dozen times, with varoius chinese!

The highlight was when one of the official photographers toook our pictures and then a reporter came to interview us in the queue!
