Two Golds on Second Finals Day

RowingWOmen's Quad win Gold The Great Britain boats won two gold and three bronze medals on the second finals day at the Rowing World Championships, in Munich, Germany.

The women's quadruple scull of Katherine Grainger, Fran Houghton, Debbie Flood and Annie Vernon led the field from the start to win their third consecutive world title.

In the lightweight men's four, Richard Chambers, James Lindsay-Fynn, Paul Mattick and James Clarke pulled past Italy in the final stages to win gold for the first time.

Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter clinched a bronze in the lightweight double sculls.

The men's eight of Tom James, Tom Stallard, Tom Lucy, Tom Solesbury, Josh
West, Richard Egington, Robin Bourne–Taylor and Alastair
Heathcote wion an unexpected bronze.

But it was the women's eight of Carla Ashford, Baz Moffat, Alice Freeman, Louisa Reeve, Natasha Howard, Alison Knowles, Katie Greves, Jess Eddie who provided the biggest surprise in the only final where Olympic qualification was not already assured. Needing to a void a last place finish to get the boat into the Olympic Regatta the crew produced an impressive performance to not only achieve this but also win the bronze!

Great Britain now has eleven boats in the Olympic Regatta.

By reaching the World Championships final, all these boats qualified for Beijing. The Olympic finals for these boats is on 17th August.
