Morrison and Rhodes win Gold in the 49er

SailingAyrton wins World Championship goldSteve Morrison and Ben Rhodes clinched gold in the 49er class at the World Sailing Championships, in Cascais, Portugal. Morrison and Rhodes went into medal race with an 11 point lead over their nearest Austrian rivals Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Leopold. After a slow start they finished fourth to extend their lead to 17 points.

The 2006 World Champions Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks finished in ninth overall after an eighth place in the 49er medal race.

Thirteen countries (Great Britain, Austria, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, United States, Denmark, Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Portugal and Canada) qualified to participate in the 2008 Olympics in Qingdao, China. The five remaining slots will be determined at the 49er Class World Championship in Sydney, Australia (2-9 January 2008).

The medal round of the 49er class at the Olympics takes place on 17th August.
