Gavin wins World Boxing Gold

BoxingLightweight (60kg), Frankie Gavin won Britain's first ever Amateur Gold medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Chicago, United States.

He beat the Italian, Domenico Valentino in the final bout. Gavin lead 3:1 at the end of the first round and extended to 8:4 at the completion of round two. With the sore at 13:7 at the end of the third round, Gavin cruised to an eventual 18:10 victory.

However, Gavins' semi-final victory against the reigning 57kg Olympic Champion (Athens, 2004), 60kg World Champion (China, 2005) and 60kg European Champion (Bulgaria, 2006) is the bout that has installed him as the favourite for Olympic Gold.

Gavin advanced to the final with victories over;
  • Omar Ward of Barbados (20:0)
  • Merey Akshalov of Kazakstan (18:9)
  • Ramal Amanov of Azebaijan (21:10)
  • Onur Sipal of Turkey (16:7)
  • Alexey Tishchenko of Russia (19:10)

Day 16The boxing competition takes place throughot the Olympifc programme. Six finals take place on the final day.
