Women's Individual Pursuit

Rebecca RomeroCyclingRebecca Romero hopes to be only the second woman in history to win medals in two different sports at the Summer Olympics. Having won a silver medal as part of Quadruple Sculls Rowing squad at Athens 2004 (with Frances Houghton, Debbie Flood, Alison Mowbray), she is now aiming to achieve a similar feat in the Sport of Cycling.

Form

Rebecca Romero won two Silver Medals at the 2006/07 UCI Track World Cups (at Moscow & Manchester). At the recent World Championships she set a new national record in qualifying for the Individual Pursuit final, where she claimed a silver medal. One of her main rivals could be fellow Briton Wendy Houvenaghel, who was World Track Cup champion for the Women's Pursuit event for 2005/2006, and Commonwealth Broze Medallist Emma Davies-Jones (who competed at Athens 2004).

Qualification

The Women's Pursuit is a twelve competitor event, consisting of;

  • Winner of the event at the "B" World Championships (Cape Town, 26-28 July, 2007)
  • Winner of the event at the World Cup Series (Sydney, Beijing, Los Angeles and Ballerup, 11 November 2007 - 17 February 2008)
  • Winner of the event at the World Championships (Manchester, 27-30 March, 2008)
  • Nine riders based on the UCI Ranking.

What to see

Wheras Rebecca Romeros chances may not be the best cycling Medal Chances, this could be one of the stories of Beijing 2008 and is therefore an event that we would like to try and see.
