Brabants wins World Gold and Silver

Canoe/Kayak - FlatwaterTim Brabants wins Brabants wins World Gold and SilverTim Brabants became World Champion in the K1 1000m at the World Championships, in Duisburg, Germany. He beat Canada’s Olympicv Champion, Adam Van Koeverden to take the Gold.

In the shorter 500m final Tim was again up against Van Koeverden, this time it was even closer and Tim won the Silver medal in a time of 1.:36.607. Van Koeverden marginally won Gold in 1:36.279.

The regatta is of extra significance this year because it is a qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Tim’s top positions will secure Great Britain’s representation in the 1000m and 500m events in Beijing next year; this is a fantastic result for Brabants who has had an incredibly successful season.

Unfortunately, no other British boat managed to secure Olympic qualification. The last chance for British competitors to qualify comes at the European Championships on 15-18 May 2008 in Milano, Italy, where two places are available in most eventd.

Day 15The Men's K1 500m event takes place on 23rd August.
