Joe Muray wins AIBA bronze

Bantamweight (54kg) Joe Murray won a bronze medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Chicago, United States.

He was beaten by Mongolian Enkhbat Badar-Uugan in the semi-final, but Murray's performance has earned him a place in the Olympic boxing competition.

Murray reached the semi-finals with victories over;

• Maximilliano Marquez of Argentian (matched stopped in third round with Murray ahead 26:6)
• Carlos Cuadras Quiroa of Mexico (28:19)
• Bruno Julie of Mauritia (26:19)
• Yu Gu of China (14:11)

Murray will be aiming to reach the finals of the Olympic boxing competition on 24 August 2008.

Tony Jeffries gets Beijing chance

Light Heavyweight (81kg) Tony Jeffries, qualified for Beijing by finishing in the last eight at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Chicago, United States. Jeffries was beaten in the quarter-finals by Yerkebuian Shynaliyev of Kazakstan.

Jeffries advanced to the quarter finals with victories over;

• Daniel Kooij of the Netheralands (13:6)
• Chris Downs of USA (18:9)
• Ramazan Magomedov of Belarussia (18:6)

Jeffries will be hoping to raech the finals of the Olympic boxing competition on 24 August 2008.

Prices misses chance for Beijing spot through injury

Superheavyweight (+91 kg) David Price has been forced to withdraw from the quarter finals at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Chicago.

Unfortunately, this means that he has failed to qualify for Beijing as there are only four places available in this category.

Price advanced to the quarter-finals with victories over;

• Marko Tomasovic of Croatia (23:11)
• Mohamed Samoudi of France (stopped in Round 2)
• Primislav Dimovski of Macedonia (20:4)

There are another four superheavyweight spots available to European boxers from two qualification tournaments. These are to be held Pescara, Italy on 24th February and Athens, and Greece, on 7th April.

Joe Murray, Frankie Gavin, Bradley Saunders and Tony Jeffries have earned their places at Beijing by advancing to the quarter finals in their respective weight categories..

The boxing competition takes place throughout the Olympic period. Price will be hoping to reach the finals of the Olympic boxing competition on 24 August 2008.

Month End - Number of Posts per Olympic Sport

Finally news on our tickets from Sportsworld. From our list of 23 major requests we have have 12 sets of tickets. Most disapointing is that we have no swimming or cycling tickets. We have got tickets for the Opening Ceremony, but will have to wait on the Closing Ceremony, as they have asked for more.

However, we will also be at the Rowing and the last two nights of the Athletics. We have to wait now to see what the ticket situation is before we request ticvkets for other events.

September was a big month, in terms of Olympic qualification, but things are quiet in October.

Pooley wins time trial quota place

Emma Pooley finished eighth in the Women’s Time Trial at the UCI World Road Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

Pooleys placing guarantees at least one Nation place in the Olympic Time Trial.

The women’s Time Trial takes place on 13th August.
